Dear Paul,
I live on Eastern Long Island, New York and have now read three of your books and look forward to reading more!
I thought you might enjoy this joke:

A traveling Amish man parked his buggy outside a suburban home after travelling for almost a full day. He wanted to get for some water for him and the parrot on his shoulder. He reached the door and knocked....before he could make his request, a bury, tattooed man opened the door and asked:
"Where did you get him?" The parrot replied: "Lancaster...there's hundreds of them."

Wishing you a very happy Christmas.

I give quite a few talks each year at libraries, book clubs, and literary groups, and I would be happy to give one at yours next year. I have a modest speaker's fee and a mileage charge of 15 cents a mile for travel over 80 miles round trip. I tailor my remarks to the type of audience, and I am happy to autograph books. The most popular stories are about Amish people I have met over the years, and I make it as fun as possible, while still talking seriously about Amish culture, religion and society in Holmes County, Ohio. People also want to know how I got started writing the Ohio Amish Mysteries, and I usually talk about the themes that are present in each of my six mystery novels. I will contact you by email in the next day or two, and we can discuss arrangements. I am glad you wrote early; 2009 is filling up.

Hi Paul-
Would you ever consider doing a talk at the Erie County Public Library for our Blasco Senior Day program? I was thinking about October 8, 2009 at 1PM in the Admiral Room of the Blasco Library. Usually talks run about one hour. Is there a fee or cost for travel? (Erie PA) You can look at our website at www.erielibrary.org
Thanks-

Yes, it can be said that the Amish constitute a cult - a Christian cult of pacifism. That said, what you have to remember is that they are peasants, not saints. They have all the problems and shortcomings any people would have. But, they are not a murder cult, or a gun cult, or a polygamist cult, or a tax evasion cult, or any of the more troubling types of personality cults that spring up for the benefit of a few leaders or promoters. They are separatists, pacifists, and non-industrialists. Most of them would rather be left alone. Some never even go into town. All things considered, I figure I can live with that.

When will the real world see these people for what they are? They are a cult. Nothing more and nothong less. I live in a large old order Amish community, it is not what people think. However they are a tourist attraction here and bring in tourist dollars so here the laws that apply to the English do not apply to the Amish. Alot of folks in this community break our laws everyday. Everyone here just turns their head.
